Tokyo Hotels with a Large Public Bath: 5 Compared by Listing

We did not stay at these hotels. This page is built from Rakuten Travel listings. The buttons are affiliate links to Rakuten Travel and Agoda, labeled PR.

This page is for people who want a hotel in Tokyo's 23 wards with a large public bath and want to know what the listings actually say before booking. It sets out five hotels using only listing data: whether bath hours are given, what the bath is described as having, the walk from the station, the price for one night and the Rakuten Travel review scores. It contains no impressions from a stay.

Quick answer

  • After "large bath", look for whether the listing says how late you can use it. Of these five, only one does.
  • Some listings describe the men's and women's baths separately. Read that line, because the facilities can differ.
  • Besides the overall review score, look at the "bath" score Rakuten Travel shows in its breakdown.

Who this helps, and who it does not

It helps if you want to stretch out in a larger bath after a day in Tokyo, if a bath in the room is not enough for you, or if you may arrive late and still want to use the bath.

It helps less if you choose by water type, because this page goes no further than what the listings state about facilities. It also does not help if you need a room for 2 adults at or under ten thousand yen: on the date recorded, none of these five was.

Three things to check in a listing

1. Are the bath hours given? Only Apa Hotel Sugamo-Ekimae (アパホテル〈巣鴨駅前〉) states them: its listing says the large bath and open-air bath are on the top floor and open until 26:00 (that is, 2 a.m. the next morning). The other four, Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori, Hotel Coco Grande Kita-Senju, Super Hotel Ikebukuro-Eki Kitaguchi and Mitsui Garden Hotel Shiodome Italia-gai, give no hours in the Rakuten Travel facility data. That does not mean you cannot use the bath late. It means you cannot tell before booking from that data alone.

2. Are the men's and women's baths described separately? Hotel Coco Grande Kita-Senju is the clearest: its listing names an open-air bath and a dry sauna for men and a bedrock bath for women. Super Hotel Ikebukuro-Eki Kitaguchi lists separate-gender large baths with a carbonated spring, and Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori says the women's bath now also has a cold plunge bath. For those two, the listing does not say what each side has.

3. The "bath" score in the reviews. Rakuten Travel shows average scores by item as well as an overall score. For bath, the five are: Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori 4.51, Hotel Coco Grande Kita-Senju 4.45, Apa Hotel Sugamo-Ekimae 4.32, Super Hotel Ikebukuro-Eki Kitaguchi 4.19 and Mitsui Garden Hotel Shiodome Italia-gai 4.08. The order differs from the overall scores. Mitsui Garden has an overall average of 4.28 but a bath score of 4.08.

Apa Hotel Sugamo-Ekimae (アパホテル〈巣鴨駅前〉)

This is the one listing that gives bath hours: the large bath and open-air bath are on the top floor and open until 26:00. The listing gives 2 minutes on foot from the main gate of Sugamo Station on the Yamanote line, and says the Toei Mita line exit A4 is right in front. For parking, the listing gives 22 spaces at 3,000 yen per 24 hours, first come first served, and says cars cannot enter or leave from 22:00 to 7:00. So a late arrival by car and a bath open until 26:00 do not line up.

The listing gives about 5 minutes on foot from the Ikebukuro Station west exit (north) 20a. It describes separate-gender large baths with a high-concentration carbonated spring, but gives neither the contents of each side nor bath hours. The price on 30 September was 13,480 yen. If you are driving

Parking is more than whether a hotel has it. Apa Hotel Sugamo-Ekimae has 22 spaces but closes entry and exit overnight, from 22:00 to 7:00. Hotel Coco Grande Kita-Senju lists 5 spaces by reservation. Mitsui Garden Hotel Shiodome Italia-gai, Super Hotel Ikebukuro-Eki Kitaguchi and Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori state they have no parking. If you are coming by car, read the parking line first.

Is a large bath always more expensive?

Not necessarily, going by these five. Super Hotel Ikebukuro-Eki Kitaguchi was 13,480 yen and Apa Hotel Sugamo-Ekimae was 13,870 yen, while Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori was 25,200 yen. On the same date and with the same conditions, the gap was more than ten thousand yen. Setting a budget first may shorten the search.

Sauna and cold plunge

Of the five, only Hotel Coco Grande Kita-Senju mentions a sauna (a dry sauna, men's side). Only Dormy Inn Tokyo Hatchobori mentions a cold plunge bath. The other listings mention neither.

Notes on the numbers

  • Prices are for one night on 30 September (Wednesday), for 2 adults in 1 room, as recorded when the Japanese article was made. Prices change by date. Always check the price shown on Rakuten Travel for your own dates.
  • Walking times, exits and bath hours are what each listing says, not measured by us. Review counts and averages are Rakuten Travel's.
  • Water type, bath size, room size, what breakfast includes, and check-in and check-out times are left out because the Rakuten Travel facility data does not list them, and we did not stay.
  • These five are only some of the hotels in Tokyo's 23 wards, and the page is not a ranking.
