About this article

This is an introduction built from the official sites and the listings on Rakuten Travel. The author did not stay at the hotels. It covers only what can be read from the listings and includes no impressions from a stay. Records of actual stays are in the travelogue section of the site.

Hi, I'm shiori. If you are the kind of person who checks the station name three times before booking, we would probably get along. This time I compared four hotels near stations in Yokohama, relying only on the information in the listings.

Quick answer

  • Yokohama has several stations far apart from each other. Decide which station you need first, then choose a hotel.
  • Even when two hotels share the same nearest station, a listing that gives the exit number tells you more about the day of travel.
  • If you are driving, read the parking line before the walking time.

Who this helps

  • People who are coming for the Shinkansen or Yokohama Arena and want a short trip the next morning
  • People looking around Kannai and Bashamichi who also want to keep the cost down
  • People who do not want to get lost at an unfamiliar station and want to rely on the exit named in the listing

Who it does not suit

  • People who want to stay right in front of Yokohama Station itself (none of these four lists Yokohama Station as its nearest station)
  • People who want to stay away from a station and walk around the neighborhood

Three things to check first

Searching for a hotel in Yokohama trips you up differently from Tokyo, because the stations are scattered across the city and all of them get lumped together as "Yokohama." I narrowed what I look at in a listing down to three points.

1. Which station you need. Shin-Yokohama, Kannai, Sakuragicho and Minatomirai are all in Yokohama, but each is a different place. So "near a station in Yokohama" does not narrow down the hotel yet.

For example, the nearest-station field of Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel is Shin-Yokohama, and its access line opens with 2 minutes on foot from Shin-Yokohama Station. That is close for people arriving by Shinkansen, but the Minatomirai line is not mentioned.

Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu, on the other hand, has Sakuragicho as its nearest station, and its access line also gives about 1 minute on foot from Minatomirai Station on the Minatomirai line. Even within one city, the lines the listings name are quite different.

2. Whether the exit number is given. A walking time means something different depending on which exit it is measured from. The bigger the station, the more this matters.

The two hotels whose nearest station is Kannai were interesting. APA Hotel Yokohama-Kannai is listed as 1 minute on foot from exit 3 of Kannai Station on the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Richmond Hotel Yokohama Bashamichi is listed as directly in front of exit 9 of Kannai Station on the municipal subway.

Both give the exit number: exit 3 and exit 9. Even at the same Kannai Station, they come up to the street in different places, and having that one line changes how you walk on the day. Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel and Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu, by contrast, give only a station name and minutes, with no exit number. If you want to rely on the exit, the two Kannai hotels are easier to read.

The same way of reading worked in Tokyo too. When I chose hotels near stations in Tokyo's 23 wards, what I looked at was not the minutes but the ticket gate and exit information.

3. Parking, if you are going by car. Being near a station and being easy to reach by car are different matters. Even among these four, the parking lines say different things from one hotel to the next.

The parking line for Richmond Hotel Yokohama Bashamichi is clear: the hotel has no car park, and it has no partner car park either.

That does not matter if you take the train. If you drive, not having read it will cause trouble on the day.

Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel (新横浜プリンスホテル): 2 minutes on foot from Shin-Yokohama Station

Start with the access line. It gives 2 minutes on foot from Shin-Yokohama Station. For someone getting off at Shin-Yokohama on a business trip, that one line may be enough.

The lines follow: the Tokaido Shinkansen, JR, the Yokohama Municipal Subway, and the Sotetsu-Tokyu Shin-Yokohama line. A direct bus from Haneda Airport is also mentioned.

The listing had a few more concrete numbers. It gives 2 minutes on foot from JR Shin-Yokohama Station, 1 minute on foot to Yokohama Arena, and a fastest time of about 11 minutes to Shinagawa Station. Those are useful both for people coming from central Tokyo and for people going to the arena.

The address is 3-4 Shin-Yokohama, Kohoku-ku, Yokohama. For Sep 30 (Wed), 2 adults in 1 room, the price on Rakuten Travel was 24,910 yen. There are 11,804 reviews with an average of 4.15. The more reviews there are, the less a single rating moves the average.

If you are going by car, though, be sure to read the parking line. It gives 1,000 yen per night (24 hours from entry) and says reservations cannot be accepted. The car park is also noted as scheduled to close in March 2027. So it is 1,000 yen per night, but it cannot be reserved, and a closing date is even given.

In other words, if you are driving, this hotel, too, is hard to recommend unconditionally. The right way to read it seems to be as a location for people who get off the train at Shin-Yokohama.

This hotel also gives no exit number. Check-in time, room size and breakfast are likewise not given. I would like to know those too.

Rather than fill the gaps with guesses, it is more reliable to check them on the booking page.

Notes on the numbers

How to read "our price records." These are measured values: we record the vacancy prices on Rakuten Travel once a day (a night's total for 2 adults in 1 room). In the chart on the Japanese article, the horizontal axis is the night of stay, and the letter under each point is the day of the week. Saturdays and Sundays are highlighted in orange because, in our records, Saturday stays came to 1.7 times the overall median (calculated from the records made from Oct 2 to Oct 15). The amounts at the left of each chart are that hotel's highest and lowest prices, and the orange dot marks the lowest day. The vertical scale differs from hotel to hotel, so the heights of the lines cannot be compared between hotels. Reference prices and discount rates shown on the booking sites are not used. Prices change, so check the latest on each booking site.

Prices move from day to day. The figures in the table above are Rakuten Travel's amounts for one night on Sep 30 (Wed) for 2 adults in 1 room, as recorded when the article was made, and they change by date. Always check what each site shows when you book. Walking times are what each listing says, not measured by us.

Choosing by distance to the station alone will trip you up

A short walk is only one part of choosing a hotel. Reading the listings side by side, I noticed two points that are especially easy to get wrong in Yokohama.

If you decide by "near a station in Yokohama," the station may be different. Shin-Yokohama and Yokohama are different stations. So are Kannai and Sakuragicho. Yet on a booking screen they all line up as hotels in the same "Yokohama."

Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel, which I treated as the lead hotel this time, has Shin-Yokohama as its nearest station, and the first line named in its access field is the Tokaido Shinkansen. If your business is on the Minatomirai side, the lines the listing names do not fit. That is why the order matters: do not start from the hotel. Decide where you plan to be the next day, and then choose the station. In that order, you will notice if you have mixed up station names.

Even near a station, you may not be able to park. Richmond Hotel Yokohama Bashamichi is described as directly in front of subway exit 9, which means the exit is right outside. Yet its parking line says the hotel has no car park and no partner car park.

The parking line for APA Hotel Yokohama-Kannai, by contrast, gives the number of spaces and the fee: 64 spaces (not reservable), a height limit, and 2,500 yen per night from 13:00 to 13:00 the next day. Both are nearest to Kannai Station, yet they treat cars this differently. Which line you read depends on whether you travel by train or by car.

Points that catch people out before booking

Is a hotel near a station always expensive?

Not necessarily, it seems. APA Hotel Yokohama-Kannai is listed as 1 minute on foot from subway exit 3, and on Sep 30 (Wed), for 2 adults in 1 room, it was 10,772 yen. Richmond Hotel Yokohama Bashamichi was 10,350 yen.

Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu was 24,300 yen and Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel was 24,910 yen (the same day). The distance from the station alone does not set the price. Which one costs less depends on the dates, so check what each site shows.

How far can you rely on the average review score?

It is safest to read the score together with the count. Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel has 11,804 reviews with an average of 4.15, and APA Hotel Yokohama-Kannai has 10,873 with an average of 4.18. The averages are close, but the counts are not the same.

Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu has an average of 4.63 on 10,693 reviews. When the averages are this far apart, there is no need to look at the counts. I think the count matters only when the averages are close.

The listing for APA Hotel Yokohama-Kannai also mentions a large public bath, an open-air bath and a sauna. I write in more detail about choosing a hotel by what its listing says about baths in the article comparing hotels in Osaka.

What this article does not cover

Check-in time, breakfast and room size are mostly not covered, because the Rakuten Travel facility data has no field for them and because I did not stay.

There is one exception: the listing for Richmond Hotel Yokohama Bashamichi states that all rooms are 18 square metres or larger, which gives a lower limit for room size. Of the four hotels, this is the only one that mentions room size.

Summary

  • Yokohama has several stations far apart from each other. Decide which station you need first.
  • Even when two hotels share the same nearest station, a listing that gives the exit number tells you more about the day of travel.
  • If you are driving, read the parking line before the minutes from the station.

Among these four, Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel was the only one whose listing gives 2 minutes on foot from a Shinkansen station. For someone planning to get off at Shin-Yokohama, that one line is useful.
