About this article

This is an introduction built from the information published on the hotels' official sites and on Rakuten Travel. The author did not stay at any of these hotels. What is written here is only what can be read from the listings, and it contains no impressions from a stay. Records of stays the author actually made are in the travelogue section of the site.

Hi! People whose hobby is reading a hotel's access line from end to end are mostly my friends. I am shiori. This time I compared four hotels close to a station in Tokyo's 23 wards, relying only on what the listings say.

Quick answer

  • If you want to keep your travel short on a business trip, look at which gate the listing says you start from, not only at the number of minutes on foot.
  • If rain and luggage matter, a note about an underground passage helps. Check the hours when it can be used as well.
  • Where you go the next morning changes which station you should stay at.

Who it suits

  • People with a first move early the next morning who want to cut the time spent getting ready at the hotel
  • People pulling a suitcase who want fewer stairs and less distance outdoors
  • People who do not know Tokyo's geography well and do not want to get lost in a station

Who it does not suit

  • People who want to stay away from a station and walk around that neighborhood
  • People going by car (it is quicker to read the parking conditions before the distance from the station)

First, three points to look at

If you decide only from the number of minutes on foot from the station, you may end up walking more than you expected on the day, because the same number of minutes can mean a different walking distance depending on where the gate is. I narrowed what I look at when reading a listing down to three points.

1. Which gate, not just the minutes

Even at the same 5 minutes on foot, the burden differs depending on whether you are right outside the gate or have to cross the station first. So I look for hotels whose access line names the gate.

All four hotels here named a gate or an exit. On top of that, New Otani Inn Tokyo adds a distance: 150 m, 1 minute on foot from the east side of the north ticket gate. With the distance given in metres, it should be easier to get a feel for it on the day.

2. A note about an underground passage, and its hours

When you think about a rainy day and a suitcase, the route matters more than the minutes. Whether you can walk under a roof changes how tired you get, even over the same distance.

Shinjuku Washington Hotel Main Building is listed as 8 minutes on foot from the south exit of Shinjuku Station. The listing also says the hotel is directly connected by an underground passage, with hours of 6:00 to 22:45. On the numbers alone it is on the far side, but on a rainy day it is still an option.

What I look at here is the hours. On a day when you leave before 6:00, you are outside the underground hours in the listing. If an early departure is the plan, it is safer to think in terms of the distance on the street.

3. Where you head the next morning

The point of moving closer to a station is to shorten the next morning's trip, isn't it? Then it makes more sense to choose the station by working back from where you are going.

The listings had some clues. Shinagawa Prince Hotel has Shinagawa Station, on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, as its nearest station, and the listing says the fastest time from Haneda Airport Domestic Terminal Station on the Keikyu line is 14 minutes. Ours Inn Hankyu is listed as 30 minutes to Haneda Airport and 15 minutes by JR to Tokyo Station.

New Otani Inn Tokyo (ニューオータニイン東京), 150 m from Osaki Station

This is what the access line says. The hotel is directly connected to Osaki Station on the JR Yamanote and Saikyo lines and the Rinkai line, and it is 150 m, 1 minute on foot, from the east side of the north ticket gate. It gives the line names and the gate name, and even the distance in metres. Of the four hotels, all gave a gate or an exit, but only this one gave metres.

The address is 1-6-2 Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. For 30 September (Wednesday), 2 adults in 1 room, the price was 21,600 yen (as shown on Rakuten Travel). Rakuten Travel shows 9,716 reviews with an average of 4.18. The more reviews there are, the less each single rating moves the average.

If you are going by car, it is worth looking at the parking note too. The listing gives a discount for hotel guests, with the condition written as 2,500 yen within 24 hours of entry, if the car is not taken out.

For breakfast details and room size, the Rakuten Travel facility information has no entry. If you want to know them, check the booking page.

Our price record. In each hotel's row of the comparison table, the Japanese article shows a chart of the site's own price record: the prices recorded for 14 nights (2 adults, 1 room, total for one night), with the lowest and the highest night named. The Japanese original shows the recorded amount for every night; this English page names the lowest and highest days only, so see the original for the amounts:

  • New Otani Inn Tokyo: 14 nights starting 12 weeks ahead (17 December to 30 December). The lowest day was 20 December (Sun); the highest was 30 December (Wed).
  • Shinagawa Prince Hotel: 14 nights starting 4 weeks ahead (23 October to 5 November). The lowest day was 1 November (Sun); the highest was 29 October (Thu).

Notes on the numbers

How to read "our price record". These are actual values: we record the vacancy prices on Rakuten Travel once a day (2 adults, 1 room, total for one night). On the Japanese article's charts the horizontal axis is the night of the stay, and the text under each point is the day of the week. Saturday and Sunday are shown in orange, because in our records a Saturday stay came to 1.7 times the overall median (calculated from the records made from 24 September to 8 October). The amounts on the left of each chart are that hotel's highest and lowest, and the orange dot marks the lowest day. The vertical scale differs from hotel to hotel, so you cannot compare the height of the lines between hotels. We do not use the reference prices or discount rates shown on booking sites. Prices change, so please check the latest on the booking site.

Prices move from day to day. The figures in the table above are Rakuten Travel's prices for one night for 2 adults in 1 room on 30 September (Wednesday). When you book, please be sure to look at what the site shows. The prices are what was recorded for that date (2 adults, 1 room) when this article was made, and they change by date. The walking minutes are what each listing says, not measured by us.

Choosing only by being close to the station can trip you up

A short walk is only one part of choosing a hotel. Reading the listings side by side, I noticed two points where it is easy to go wrong.

If the gate is not written, you cannot judge the distance until the day

All four hotels here named a gate or an exit. But when you look for a hotel yourself, you will also meet ones that give only the minutes. In that case you cannot tell where in the station you will arrive until you go there.

For a hotel whose access line has no gate name, it is safer not to trust the minutes alone. Check the position of the exit on a map before you decide.

If you go by car, read the parking conditions first

The distance from the station and how easy the parking is are separate matters. The Shinagawa Prince Hotel listing says it has 500 parking spaces at 1,500 yen per night, and it also adds that parking cannot be reserved. The number of spaces, the fee and whether you can reserve are worded differently by each hotel, so read them side by side.

Points that catch people before booking

Are hotels near the station more expensive?

For these four hotels, it held. I looked at 30 September (Wednesday), 2 adults in 1 room. The lowest was Shinjuku Washington Hotel Main Building at 17,760 yen, a hotel 8 minutes on foot from the south exit of Shinjuku Station. Ours Inn Hankyu, listed as 1 minute on foot from the central ticket gate of Oimachi Station, was 22,400 yen.

But this is the figure for one day, and the order changes from day to day. Please do not assume a hotel is expensive just because it is near the station; look at the days you want to stay.

How far can the review scores be relied on?

It is safer to read them together with the count. Shinagawa Prince Hotel has 24,648 reviews with an average of 4.06, and Ours Inn Hankyu has 8,875 with an average of 4.37. If the number of reviews behind each average differs, the same average means something different.

What this article does not cover

Check-in time, room size and breakfast details are not written here. The Rakuten Travel facility information has no entry for them, and I did not stay at the hotels. I know these are exactly the things you want to know; I would want to know them too. But I would rather leave it as "not listed" than fill the gap with guesses.

Summary

  • Look at whether the listing says which gate you start from, rather than the minutes on foot.
  • If you have rain and luggage, look for a note about an underground passage, and check the hours when it can be used.
  • Work back from where you go the next morning, and choose the station to stay at.

Of these four hotels, only New Otani Inn Tokyo gave the distance in metres. For people who want a feel for it on the day, that one line helps.
