About this article
This is an introduction built from the information published on the hotels' official sites and on Rakuten Travel. The author did not stay at any of these hotels. What is written here is only what can be read from the listings, and it contains no impressions from a stay. Records of stays the author actually made are in the travelogue section of the site.
Hi! People who feel reassured when they find a hotel whose access line goes all the way down to the exit number are mostly my friends. I am shiori. This time I put five hotels close to a station in Osaka city side by side, relying only on what the listings say.
Quick answer
- If you want a hotel close to a station, look at which ticket gate or exit the listing starts from, not only at the number of minutes on foot.
- If rain and a suitcase matter, look at whether the listing gives the exit number of an underground mall.
- If you head to the airport the next morning, check the distance to the limousine bus stop as well.
Who it suits
- People who arrive in Osaka on business and want to keep the next morning's travel as short as possible
- People pulling a suitcase who want to know the way from the station beforehand
- People who do not know Osaka's stations well and do not want to get lost on the day
Who it does not suit
- People going into Osaka by car (it is quicker to read the parking line before the distance from the station)
- People who want to stay in a town away from a station and walk around that town
First, three points to look at
If you decide only from the number of minutes on foot from the station, you may end up walking more than you expected on the day, because the position of the ticket gate or exit changes the route even for the same number of minutes. I narrowed what I look at when reading a listing down to three points.
1. Which gate or exit, not just the minutes
Even at the same 5 minutes on foot, the burden differs depending on whether you are right outside the gate or on the other side of the station. So I look first at hotels whose access line names the gate, or even the exit number.
Of the five hotels here, three named a gate or an exit.
Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda says 3 minutes on foot from the west ticket gate of JR Osaka Station. Shin-Osaka Sunnystone Hotel says about 2 minutes on foot from exit 1 (the north exit) of Nishinakajima-Minamigata Station. Hotel Kansai says 3 minutes on foot from exit M14 of the underground mall "Izumi no Hiroba".
Compared with a bare number, it is easier to get a feel for the day. If you do not know the station well, whether this one line is there should change how much time you spend lost.
I line up other cities by the same method. The station hotels of Tokyo's 23 wards and of Yokohama were also chosen from the gate and exit wording.
2. Whether the listing gives the exit of the underground mall
Once you think about a rainy day and a large piece of luggage, the minutes alone make it hard to decide. If you know where you can come up from underground, the plan for the day is easier.
The access line of Hotel Kansai says 3 minutes on foot from exit M14 of the underground mall "Izumi no Hiroba". It also says 10 minutes on foot from Osaka Station and the Umeda stations above ground. For the same hotel, the minutes change depending on where you start walking.
However, the listing does not say whether there is a roof after you leave M14, and it gives no opening hours for the underground mall. On a day when you move at dawn or late at night, it is safer to plan on the 10-minute street route.
3. Where you head the next morning
The point of moving closer to a station is to shorten the next morning's trip, isn't it? Then it makes more sense to choose the station by working back from where you are going.
The listings had some clues. Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda lists the airport limousine bus stop "Herbis Osaka" at 2 minutes on foot. Hotel Hanshin Osaka lists the airport limousine bus stop at about 10 minutes on foot.
The access line of Shin Hankyu Hotel Annex says Universal City Station is about 12 minutes by direct JR train. If tomorrow's destination is already decided, you can choose backwards from there.
Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda (ハートンホテル西梅田), 3 minutes from the west gate of Osaka Station
The access line says 3 minutes on foot from the west ticket gate of JR Osaka Station. It goes on to give 2 minutes on foot from the airport limousine bus stop "Herbis Osaka". The ticket gate and the bus stop, both with their minutes, are in one line.
The address is 3-3-55 Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka, and the nearest station is given as Osaka. The listing's own description is short too: it gives the 3-minute walk from the west ticket gate and mentions business and sightseeing trips. You can see that this is a hotel that leans on its location.
Let me look at the price too. For 30 September 2026 (Wednesday), 2 adults in 1 room, it was 13,500 yen (6,750 yen per person). This is the actual amount for a weekday night shown on Rakuten Travel.
Rakuten Travel shows 7,497 reviews with an average of 4.19. The more reviews there are, the less each single rating moves the average. Looking only at the location part of the breakdown, it is 4.28, which came out higher than the overall score.
For people going by car, there is a clear note. The parking line is a single word: none. If you want to leave a car nearby, you have to find a place yourself.
Breakfast details, room size and check-in time are not written here. The Rakuten Travel facility information has no entry for them and I did not stay. I would rather leave it as "not listed" than fill the gap with guesses.

- Price: 13,500 yen for 2 adults in 1 room (6,750 per person), on 30 Sep (Wed)

Our price record. In each hotel's row of the comparison table, the Japanese article shows a chart of the site's own price record: the prices recorded for 13 or 14 nights (2 adults, 1 room, total for one night), with the lowest and the highest night named. The Japanese original shows the recorded amount for every night; this English page names the lowest and highest days only, so see the original for the amounts:
- Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda: 13 nights starting 3 weeks ahead (16 October to 29 October). The lowest day was 18 October (Sun); the highest was 17 October (Sat).
- Shin Hankyu Hotel Annex: 14 nights starting 12 weeks ahead (18 December to 31 December). The lowest day was 20 December (Sun); the highest was 31 December (Thu).

Notes on the numbers
How to read "our price record". These are actual values: we record the vacancy prices on Rakuten Travel once a day (2 adults, 1 room, total for one night). On the Japanese article's charts the horizontal axis is the night of the stay, and the text under each point is the day of the week. Saturday and Sunday are shown in orange, because in our records a Saturday stay came to 1.7 times the overall median (calculated from the records made from 25 September to 8 October). The amounts on the left of each chart are that hotel's highest and lowest, and the orange dot marks the lowest day. The vertical scale differs from hotel to hotel, so you cannot compare the height of the lines between hotels. We do not use the reference prices or discount rates shown on booking sites. Prices change, so please check the latest on the booking site.
Prices move from day to day. The figures in the table above are the same date and the same conditions for every hotel. When you book, please be sure to check what each site shows. The prices are what was recorded for 30 September (2 adults, 1 room) when this article was made, and they change by date. The walking minutes are what each listing says, not measured by us.
Hotel Hanshin Osaka has a note that natural hot spring water is supplied to all guest rooms. This is about the bathroom in the guest room; the listing does not mention a public bath. If you are looking for a public bath, an article on the Japanese site that compares Osaka hotels with a large public bath should be closer to what you want.
Shin Hankyu Hotel Annex (新阪急ホテルアネックス)
The listing gives about 5 minutes on foot from JR Osaka Station and from Osaka Metro Umeda Station, and it names the two stations separately. It also gives about 12 minutes by direct JR train to Universal City Station. Choosing only by being close to the station can trip you up
A short walk is only one part of choosing a hotel. Reading the listings side by side, I noticed two points where it is easy to go wrong.
Osaka Station and Umeda Station cannot be lumped together
The listing of Shin Hankyu Hotel Annex writes JR Osaka Station and Osaka Metro Umeda Station separately. Hotel Kansai also wrote them side by side, as Osaka Station and the Umeda stations of each line.
If you first decide the station name on the line you will ride, the way you read the minutes changes. Even the same 10 minutes on foot is different when you start walking from a different place.
If you go by car, read the parking conditions first
The distance from the station and the parking conditions are separate matters. Even among these five hotels, the wording was all over the place.
Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda says "none", and Hotel Kansai says there is no dedicated car park. Shin-Osaka Sunnystone Hotel gives 10 spaces at 1,000 yen per night, first come first served, and says parking cannot be reserved. Hotel Hanshin Osaka gives a shared underground car park with 48 spaces and 3,000 yen for 24 hours from entry, tax included, and here too parking cannot be reserved and is first come first served.
Shin Hankyu Hotel Annex was worded a little differently: it gives the rooftop car park of Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station at 3,000 yen per night, tax included. The number of spaces, the fee and whether you can reserve are worded differently by each hotel, so read them side by side.
In other words, Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda, the hotel I put first, does not suit people who drive, because its parking line says "none". This article is written for people who come into Osaka by train.
Points that catch people before booking
Are hotels near the station more expensive?
Not this time. Hotel Kansai says 10 minutes on foot above ground, and 3 minutes on foot from M14 of the underground mall. On 30 September (Wednesday), 2 adults in 1 room, it was 5,600 yen (2,800 yen per person). Shin-Osaka Sunnystone Hotel is about 2 minutes on foot from the exit, and was 7,340 yen (3,670 yen per person).
Location and price do not always seem to move in the same direction. But price and the review average do not move together either. Hotel Kansai has 9,113 reviews with an average of 3.69, and Shin-Osaka Sunnystone Hotel has 10,410 with an average of 4.06. Even in similar price ranges, the ratings differ.
How far can the review scores be relied on?
I think it is safer to read them together with the count. The five hotels here have between 7,497 and 10,410 reviews, so all of them have a fairly large base.
Even so, the averages range from 3.69 to 4.32. It also helps to look at the location part of the breakdown, not just the overall score. Hotel Hanshin Osaka has 4.42 for location, higher than its overall 4.32.
What this article does not cover
Check-in time, room size and breakfast details are not written here. The Rakuten Travel facility information has no entry for them, and I did not stay at the hotels. I know these are exactly the things you want to know; I would want to know them too.
The same goes for the opening hours of the underground mall and the location of the elevators. For what the listings do not have, please check the booking page or the official site.
Summary
- If you want a hotel close to a station, look at which ticket gate or exit the listing starts from, rather than the minutes on foot.
- If it may rain and you have a suitcase, look at whether the listing gives the exit number of an underground mall.
- If you head to the airport the next morning, check the distance to the limousine bus stop as well.
Of these five hotels, only Hearton Hotel Nishi-Umeda gave both the name of the ticket gate and the minutes to the limousine bus stop. If you head for the airport the next morning, that one line works in its favor. If you would rather be close to an exit of the underground mall, choosing Hotel Kansai is another way to go.
